Keith Brautigam

Keith Brautigam is an accomplished IT and cybersecurity professional with extensive experience in identity and access management. Over the years, he has held several positions, progressing into leadership roles such as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Interim Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Penn State University. His career has been focused on improving security systems, optimizing IT infrastructures, and ensuring compliance with industry standards across various organizations.

Keith was born in San Diego, California, and moved to the East Bay Area of San Francisco when he was two. He developed an early interest in technology, influenced by friends with Amiga and Atari computers. Initially captivated by video games, he soon became interested in enhancing the performance of computers to improve his gaming experience. Later, his family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where he attended high school and pursued a Communication and Media Studies degree at the University of Iowa. This also provided him the opportunity to study abroad in Mérida, Venezuela.

After earning his degree, Keith faced a challenging job market, particularly after the 1990s eCommerce bubble. He moved to Research Triangle, North Carolina, and worked as a supervisor at a Borders bookstore. While the role was unrelated to his field, it allowed him to gain valuable customer service and leadership skills. He eventually returned to Iowa City and accepted an IT position at a medical research center, which marked the start of his career in IT. There, he worked on system administration and security, focusing on HIPAA compliance.

Keith transitioned into higher education, where he contributed to modernizing systems and integrating new technologies. His work with Agile SCRUM software development practices led to his recruitment by the University of Iowa’s central IT department. In 2014, he moved to Penn State University, where he advanced from Manager to Director, CISO, and ultimately Interim CIO. During his time there, he led key initiatives, including implementing the Shields Up cybersecurity program and strengthening the university's security framework.

In 2023, Keith relocated to the Denver Metro Area and took on a new role at Hunter Douglas as the Global Cybersecurity Director of Identity and Access Management. In this role, he quickly established an IAM program, led the implementation of an identity governance system, and worked to enhance security across multiple regions. His career continues to be defined by his leadership and expertise in IT and cybersecurity, and he remains committed to driving progress and innovation in the field.
